Gift box a fun gift for both!

Okay, I feel like because we refer to research a lot these days in our blog posts, I needed to spice it up a bit with a rhyme in the title :) If anyone even noticed it - haha! But it's actually true, the gift box is a fun gift for both of you and I'll explain why!

The science behind getting a personalized gift box

Opening a gift box is a surprise...

1. The Dopamine Dance

One of the most fascinating aspects of surprise is its ability to trigger the release of dopamine in our brains. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter linked to reward and pleasure. Studies, such as the one published in the journal "Nature Neuroscience" (Schultz, 2002), have shown that surprising events, such as opening a gift box, can result in an increased release of dopamine. It is this "reward rush" that makes the moment feel extra special and memorable.

2. Excitement and anticipation

Research in psychology has also revealed that surprises increase our excitement and anticipation. In a study published in Psychological Science (Kringelbach & Berridge, 2009), researchers found that the brain's reward system is activated not only when we experience a positive surprise, but also when we expect a surprise. So even before we can pull the gift string around, say, these gift boxes , our brains are starting to enjoy the moment.

3. The symbolism of the gift

It's not just the element of surprise that makes opening a gift feel special. The symbolism behind the gift also plays an important role. An article published in the "Journal of Consumer Research" (Belk, 1979) discusses how gifts are symbols of love, appreciation, and thoughtfulness. When we open a gift, we are not only focused on the physical object, but also on the message (which is why we like to reinforce this part with a handwritten note that we send with all gift boxes) or the love that comes with it. As I said, we know gifts! The surprise reinforces this symbolic meaning and makes the gift even more meaningful.

4. Relationships and social ties

One of the most rewarding aspects of the element of surprise in gift-giving is how it strengthens our social bonds. Gift-giving is an important part of many cultures and societies, and the positive surprise of receiving a gift creates a sense of belonging. This is so nice I'm going crazy :) Studies in social psychology, published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology (Rindfleisch et al., 1997), have shown that gift-giving can increase feelings of reciprocity and appreciation between people.

So yes, all in all, it is the above, among other things, that is the basis for why Lovebox Sweden even exists <3
