Why do we celebrate Father's Day?

The story of Father's Day has its roots in the United States in 1910 when the brave Sonora Smart Dodd wanted to pay tribute to her father, who had single-handedly taken care of her and her siblings after their mother tragically passed away in infancy. The celebration took place on her father's birthday, June 19. To this day, Father's Day is celebrated in many countries in June. But in Sweden, Norway and Finland, we chose to move the celebration to the second Sunday in November so as not to lump it with Mother's Day, which is celebrated in May.

How lucky, you don't want cake on cake, you want to spread it out a little. There are also many other days to keep an eye on, cinnamon bun day, Valentine's Day, etc. ;-)

By the way, did you know that:

  • 2.5 million people are fathers in our elongated country.
  • In Sweden, we currently have about 70,600 people who have both their father, grandfather and great-grandfather still alive.
  • On Father's Day this year, 801,982 men in Sweden can both celebrate their own father and be celebrated as a father themselves.
  • Most often, fathers in Sweden have two children, but 995 of them have ten children or more (!! Talk about raising the bar for how properly celebrated one could be :D)

Yes, it's not certain that everyone has such a good relationship with their dad. But for those who do, Father's Day is a great day to show dad some extra love and warmth. Whether you do it with a gift box from us, a tie or if you do it with a hug and a cup of coffee, it's well worth spending some extra time with dad if you have the opportunity <3
