Mother's Day - why and how do you celebrate?

The day returns every year, at the end of May. But do we even know why we celebrate Mother's Day? And how do we celebrate Mother's Day? Of course, we at Lovebox Sweden want to unravel this and tell you all the answers we can, so we can celebrate this in the best possible way.

What is Mother's Day?

Mother's Day is an annual holiday dedicated to honoring and celebrating motherhood, spanning cultures and borders all over the world. It is a day when people take the opportunity to reflect on and appreciate the women who have shaped our lives in so many ways. That being said, not everyone is a mother, but everyone has or has had a mother. So Mother's Day is a day that touches us all in some way, whether we celebrate it or are celebrated on it. This year, Mother's Day falls on May 26, 2024.

But when did people start celebrating Mother's Day?

Mother's Day has its roots in ancient times and has evolved into the modern holiday we celebrate today. In ancient Greece, Rhea, the mother of the gods, was celebrated with festivals dedicated to her honor. Later, in Roman times, a similar holiday dedicated to the Roman mother goddess Cybele was celebrated in mid-March.

The modern version of Mother's Day originated in the early 1900s in the United States. Anna Jarvis, a woman from West Virginia, worked to establish a day dedicated to honoring mothers. After her own mother, Ann Jarvis, passed away in 1905, Anna decided to dedicate her life to honoring her memory and celebrating the work that mothers do for their children.

Anna Jarvis held the first memorial service for her mother in Grafton, West Virginia, in 1908. Her work and persistent efforts led to Mother's Day being officially recognized as a holiday in the United States in 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson designated the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.

Since then, Mother's Day has spread all over the world and is celebrated on different dates and in different ways depending on culture and tradition. Regardless of its origin, the purpose seems to be the same: to honor and celebrate the women who have meant so much to us in our lives.

How do you celebrate Mother's Day?

We at Lovebox Sweden ALWAYS advocate that SES. SES SES SES. Meet the person you want to honor and pay attention to on Mother's Day. There is so much that happens in the meaningful meeting between people that can never be completely replaced by not seeing each other. And if you do see each other, you can hand over a gift, eat some cake and just cozy up in each other's company.

However, it is not always possible to meet - and then we at Lovebox Sweden can help with the courtship by sending a gift directly to the recipient. To be completely honest, we dislike the fact that flowers have become so expensive and sending a flower delivery costs almost 700-1000 kronor if you want more than just a few pitiful twigs (which also wither after a short time). Courting someone should definitely not be a matter of class - that is why we offer free and fast shipping and have a wealth of gifts to choose from, which you can also luxuriate in by choosing a luxurious gift box made of quality materials.

In our Mother's Day section you will find all gifts related to Mother's Day and here you can read about how you can build your own gift box without going broke :)
